The amount of discrimination dusky girls have to face in our country is just sad. But being one myself, i completely understand how frustrating it can get to be constantly judged by other people. Here are a few realizations i have had as a dusky girl and what all i have learnt from my experiences regarding this issue.
Yeah! As a dusky girl, I have had my fair share of being recommended the lighter shade foundations. One thing I have learnt over the years is to never trust the lady at the drugstore counter! They no nothing! You could literally put flour on your face and they would say – “o madam! It suits you! Perfect shade hai!” and this crap is more for the dusky girls because salespeople just assume that you are looking for some magic potion for your complexion. We are not! I am not, not anymore.
First of all, insensitive comments about this topic do not deserve any acknowledgement. But here is what I have noticed – sometimes people don’t know what they are saying! They may not always say things about your complexion in order to hurt you. In our society, the ideal of fair skin tone is so well ingrained, that people have turned ignorant without realization. And calling such people out all the time just aggravates the issue. They grow defensive and end up saying things which are even worse. Instead of defending yourself, show them through actions that you are confident. If they don’t like your skin complexion, then you won’t force them to.
Of course girls are told that if they are not fair, they won’t get a good husband or they will not be accepted or considered beautiful. But believe me, guys with a dark complexion are told mean things too. Companies have come out with creams and lotions for men specifically as if their skin is different and it is infuriating how people endorse that very idea.
It is a little hard to believe. I know, there are still people who don’t get the right thing. But at the same time it is so encouraging to see influencers like actors and media persons to reject the stupid advertisements which make money off people’s insecurities. All my dusky girls are becoming more confident. People are becoming well aware and looking at things differently. I firmly believe that no one should have to defend themselves for who they are.
